How AI is changing our industry

Very good essay on the change AI is bringing to our industry.

What’s missing is the discussion that by no way I am sure we will keep this AI systems at the current price level for long because all the AI companies burn money like hell and some argue they never will be profitable

I feel it’s more likely that businesses will choose to build different things (I.e the version of a concept that can be built with the assistance of AI, in a similar sense to how a store might use Shopify and its presence is shaped by the limitations of Shopify) as opposed to the tools becoming capable of building as humans do.

A thought that occurred to me recently is that if programmers spend more time speaking in prompts then the practice becomes increasingly declarative. Maybe all of this will influence the design of future programming languages in some way.

If AI dominates, there will never be a “design of future [things]”. AI (or better, machine learning and neural networks) are good only in spit what it knows, faster. It will not be able to create (not at the same level as a human).

IT will turn into a is already an instance of Idiocracy (2006).

That was quite an insightful read.

While not a huge fan of the current LLM assistants, I don’t think this is going to kill the thing as a whole to be honest. If AI gets prohibitively expensive maybe the best models wont be used as widely as it is today, but the best open source model will still be run locally to be a smart assistant which will still have a high impact on productivity
